Programme overview
The Manager Shift is a first-time manager programme for people making the transition from individual contributor to people manager. It addresses the mindset change at the heart of the role — from doing the work to getting work done through others — and builds the core skills of delegation, coaching, feedback and prioritisation.
Participants practise real management situations, from delegating a task to holding a first difficult conversation, and leave with a practical plan for their first months in the role.
Why this matters
Newly promoted managers often keep doing the work themselves, struggle to delegate, avoid difficult conversations or feel caught between their team and leadership. Without support, they either burn out or lose the confidence of their teams.
Learning objectives
Participants practise how to…
- Understand the mindset shift from contributor to manager
- Delegate with clarity and appropriate follow-up

The Manager Shift — questions
First-time managers learn best by practising the situations they will face — delegating, giving feedback, setting expectations — with feedback and reflection, and then applying it on the job with support from their own manager. A single lecture rarely changes behaviour; a short journey with practice and follow-up usually does.
Ideally, yes. A short briefing for participants' managers helps them reinforce the programme and support application after the session.
Yes. The content is adjusted to focus on the challenges they are actually experiencing rather than the transition itself.
